What’s the history of the building?

For millennia, the area surrounding current day Leavenworth has been the home of the Kansa, Osage, & Delaware people. Henry Leavenworth, a Connecticut-born soldier in the American army, established Fort Leavenworth on the bluffs of the Missouri river in 1827. The Fort became a major hub for travelers along the newly established Santa Fe and Oregon Trails.
Among the travelers in 1858 came Mother Xavier Ross and twelve Sisters of Charity 1858 from Nazareth, Kentucky to establish the Immaculate Conception Grade School within the local parish. The Monsignor Bernard S. Kelly built on the sister’s work to add further education opportunities with the Catholic High School classes, originally held in small, unused classrooms in the grade school building. Increasing enrollment necessitated the construction of a permanent home.
The Immaculata High School in which you now stand was completed in 1923, and the midcentury-style wing was later added as the student body grew. After over 100 years of serving the children of this city, Immaculata High’s doors were closed. The Leavenworth Local was imagined with a vision to reopen the historic school to support the community of Leavenworth and continue The First City’s legacy as a welcoming stop for travelers.
